Though her eyes were open, she couldn't think of why; it was still pitch-black outside, apart from the silver beam of moonlight shining through the window. Her heart pounded, her mind raced, inundated with wild scenarios. It felt like a hypodermic of adrenaline had been pumped into her carotid.

Something had woken her up. She pushed upright and strained to see into the moonlit darkness, her ears pricked for any sign of an intruder.

“Nothing. Relax, Peyton. You’re chasing ghosts in your sleep,” she berated herself sotto voce. Her breathing rate began to settle. She dropped back onto the pillow and closed her eyes giving in to the drowsiness dragging her under.

Not for long though. Her senses were now too aware, and she couldn’t slip back into the realm of sleep. Then she heard it. She froze at the sound of breathing that wasn’t her own. It had a heaving vibration, rapid and harsh, like a man who had sprinted into the room.

Before she could act, a hard hand closed over her face, cutting off her ability to breathe. She struggled, her eyes stretched open wide with fear. Her nose filled with the strong scent of cigars on the hand that covered her mouth and nose. In the almost blackness her eyes strained for some sign of what was to come.

“Hmmph!” Her muted cry sounded pitiful as she kicked out, desperate for air.

Help! Somebody help me! I don’t want to die! Her desperate cries echoed only inside her mind. She struggled and tried to comprehend what was happening, but it was like trying to grip tightly onto sand. The more she squeezed her mind for a way to escape, the more it slipped through her fingers.

She kicked out again and this time her heel connected with something soft, maybe an inner thigh.

“Fucking bitch!” a dark voice growled furiously in the stillness of the night. Peyton was frantic, her lungs felt like bursting, the blood pumping through her veins sounded like a Formula 1 race car in her ears. She increased her struggles, thrashing and clawing at the hand holding her down.

“Behave,” the voice barked softly. “Stop struggling, woman, and I'll take away my hand.” He pressed his face close to hers. “Scream and it’ll earn you a fist under the chin."

He chuckled evilly as she continued to struggle, desperation to fill her lungs with oxygen made her deaf to his threats.

"Better yet, I’ll indulge in something I can at least enjoy."

His hand moved suggestively over her hip to cup her breast and squeezed. Peyton stopped breathing and turned to a statue.

“Tie the bitch up, let’s get this over with. There’s no time for your games. I don’t wish to be caught here in daylight.”

"Pity," he grated. The hand fell away at the sharp order from the doorway. “Yes, Boss.”

“Ms. Jackson, I suggest you take his warning to heart and keep quiet. He’s going to take his hand from your mouth, scream and I’ll let him loose on you.”

The hand lifted and Peyton gasped, heaving in deep gulps of air.
